Naomi Collett has officially landed the second largest carp ever caught by a female angler – a stunning 75lb 8oz mirror carp – using none other than the Wychwood Riot Recoil 10ft 3.5lb Rod, paired with a Riot FS 6000 Reel and a new mainline currently in development.
Caught during a recent trip to Periwinkle Lake in France with Wychwood’s own Darryll Slater, Naomi hooked, played, and landed the fish completely on her own – a feat made even more remarkable by the compact yet powerful setup she was using.
In Darryll’s Words
“Naomi has fished with me in the UK maybe three or four times, catching fish up to 15lbs. But the draw for this trip was nature, cheese and wine. The lake is owned by a close friend, so it was a social visit as much as a fishing one.
We travelled down to Portsmouth, then took the ferry into Caen, followed by a short 1.5-hour drive to just outside Domfront – no toll roads and stunning countryside all the way.
After short sessions on Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday marked Naomi’s first ever overnight session. We landed two fish during the day and three the following morning, including two 48lb commons for Naomi.
Then, at midnight on Wednesday, we heard a few bleeps followed by a screaming take. Naomi hooked into what turned out to be the 75.08lb mirror. Mike, the lake owner, was with us and helped capture the water shots.
Naomi handled everything herself – the bait, the rig placement, the clutch, the bobbin. She played the fish from start to finish and guided it around the weedy spots like a pro.
When she finally got in the water with it, the scale of the fish hit her. Joy, shock, excitement – all at once. It was truly special watching someone land such a powerful, majestic carp.
She still can’t stop talking about it.”
